Journey School Lynnwood believes that children are capable, competent eaters who will choose to eat foods that are good for their bodies when they are given opportunities and also offered delicious food choices.

Mealtime environments and experiences during early childhood not only impact lifelong attitudes towards food, they are also excellent opportunities to learn social and emotional skills, fine motor skills, and language skills. Mealtime environments include the setting, sights, smells, and sounds during meal and snack times.

Chef Sarah

I am a local, having grown up in Shoreline just down the road. Previous to working at JSL I was a Sous Chef at Farestart on the School meals team. Just over a year ago I became a mama to two wonderful kids and took a break from work to spend some quality time with my youngest daughter. Now I am back in the kitchen and I get to work just down the hall from both girls! In my free time I enjoy cooking, growing food and spending time with family and friends outdoors. I am super excited to be a part of the Journey School family!

Chef Nicole

Prior to joining JSL, I was the lead cook at a medical facility for traumatic brain injuries. I love cooking all types of food, and in particular have a lot of knowledge in making allergy friendly meals, including gluten and dairy free cooking. In my free time I like to sew and make crafts, as well as hike with my daughter and our two dogs.

Breakfast

Starting the children's day with a balanced, nutrition meal and full bellies helps them learn and grow!

Lunch

We ensure there are options at every meal, including allergy and food preference choices, to meet the dietary, nutritional and experiential needs of all our children.

Snack

Only the freshest ingredients are served to ensure children are experiencing all that nature has to offer.

Take Home Meals

A great way to end your week should you chose to partake in some of the beautiful, delicious and nutritious foods our chef prepares for families.

The environments in which children grow up, play and learn can have a huge impact- positive or negative - on their health, development and habits. Because so many children regularly spend time in child care arrangements outside the home, early learning providers are in a unique position to help develop healthy eating.

How young children are fed is just as important as what they are fed.​

​

  • It is normal for young children to express their budding independence by eating or not eating

  • Most toddlers are described as "picky eaters"

  • Young children will not starve if offered a variety of healthy food and are allowed to select what to eat

  • Toddlers will eat seemingly very little one day and more another day. A balanced diet occurs over the course of a week, not a day, as in adults

  • Sometimes children will not be hungry during designated meal or snack times

  • Young children are naturally slow to accept new foods and tastes. It may take offering a new food more than 10 times before a child will be willing to try it or say they like it

  • Children may ask for the same food over and over again. With time and continuing to offer a variety of foods, this will pass
